About
There can be few things better on a warm summers day than to cool down with a dip in a river or in a mountain lake. There are several designated bathing areas in Ål, but you can also find your own favourites.
Lake Strandafjorden, 2 km west of central Ål heading towards Geilo. The turning is signposted from highway Rv7 at Vangebrua. There is a sandy shore with a diving board and grassy areas with space for picnics and relaxation. Kids-friendly
Stasjonsbrua in Torpo, a pleasant bathing area with a natural shore and floating jetty.
River Lya at Votndalsåsen, access via Liatoppen. You can swim here 1,000 metres above sea level with glorious views and the option of picnicking on the soft grassy meadows along the banks.
At Bergsjø, there is a sauna where you can combine a fresh dip in the water with a nice and warm sauna. Book at Bergsjøstølen.
When swimming outside a recognized bathing area along the river Hallingdalselva, remember that the flow of the river is regulated to produce hydropower and that the flow of water suddenly can increase without warning.
During the winter there are possibilities for swimming in the communal swimming pools. Check the webpages of Ål kommune for days and timetables.
